The little things we do not notice...
Most of us go through our day not noticing the things
around us. People are usually looking at their phone, going through emails or
searching through the various social networking cites not paying much attention
to the wonderful and interesting world around them. I was one of those people.
I would go through out the day completely and blissfully unaware of everything,
consumed by my own problems and only paying attention to my daily schedule. So
I decided to take a day to reflect on myself and on the world around me.
The first thing I did was to turn of
all my electronics. I turned of my computer; my television and I put my phone
on silent. A first it was a little strange to be so disconnected and to be
honest it got me kind of anxious. I kept thinking that my phone was going to
blow up with phone calls or that I was going to forget about something important
that I had to do for school, but I had to come terms that it was all in my
head. That is way I needed to this. I needed to relax and enjoy the little
things in life. The things we usually miss because we are so distracted and so
consumed by our own lives. In order to get out of my own head I went for a walk
around neighborhood.
My home is in Cidra. It is in the
mountainous region of Puerto Rico. Nature, beautiful flora and fauna surround
my house. These are the things that I never really appreciated about living
there. As I walked around, I stared to get a new perspective on the place I
grew up in. I stared noticing things that I did not notice or cared about
before. The first thing was, all the different types of birds that live around
my neighborhood. They were so many different shapes, sizes and colors. I had no
idea what type of birds they were, I am hardly an expert but I was still very
beautiful to see. Another thing I say was the all the flowers that surround my
neighborhood and how amazing it all was. Then I walked down to the clubhouse.
It is where the pools and exercise facilities are. I had not set foot in there
for a very long time. It changed a lot I thought. It used to be such a vibrant
place. My mother used to take my siblings and I when we were little. So I was
sad to see it so run down but that is what happens when stop paying attention
and stop taking care of the places we live in.
After that I took a drive throughout
Cidra. I went further into town, something I typically do not do. I usually get
into my car and head towards the metropolitan area. Without any distractions, I
had a very pleasant drive. I learned the importance of disconnecting from
technology and appreciating the things we have. Life is about enjoying the
little and looking closer to the things we do not typically notice.
I found myself lingering on a comment at the beginning when you mentioned you would only focus on your own problems and your day to day and sometimes people judge us like really hard for this and even ourselves but I found myself sadly constantly focusing on things on my phone or computer and after this exercise and putting it to practice more times that I'm really trying to escape my own thoughts and problems because sometimes we can't have an immediate resolution and just need to give time its course and see what happens.
